Edward Grefenstette is a Research Scientist at Facebook AI Research, and Honorary Associate Professor at UCL. He previously was, in reverse order, a Staff Research Scientist at DeepMind, the CTO of Dark Blue Labs, and a Junior Research Fellow within Oxford’s Department of Computer Science and Somerville College. He completed his DPhil (PhD) at the University of Oxford in 2013 under the supervision of Profs Coecke and Pulman, and Dr Sadrzadeh, working on applying category-theoretic tools–initially developed to model quantum information flow–to model compositionality of distributed representations in natural language semantics. His recent research has covered topics at the intersection of deep learning and machine reasoning, addressing questions such as how neural networks can model or understand logic and mathematics, infer implicit or human-readable programs, or learn to understand instructions from simulation.

Shreyansh Daftry is a Research Scientist at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, working at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Space Technology to help develop the next generation of robots for Earth, Mars and beyond. Shreyansh received his M.S. degree in Robotics from the Robotics Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, USA in 2016, and his B.S. degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering in 2013. His research interests spans computer vision, machine learning and autonomous robotics, with a focus on real-time computation, safety and adaptability.

Hado van Hasselt is a Senior Staff Research Scientist at DeepMind. He joined DeepMind in 2014, after doing a postdoc at the University of Alberta with Rich Sutton. He obtained his Ph.D. in artificial intelligence with a dissertation on reinforcement learning at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. His research focuses mostly on core learning algorithms that have the potential to scale to rich and interesting domains, and on the intersection of reinforcement learning and deep learning.

His research is focused on getting computers to learn generative models of images that not only produce good samples but also good explanations for their observations. Prior to this, he was a post-doctoral researcher at Microsoft Research in Cambridge. Pierre-Yves Oudeyer

Pierre-Yves Oudeyer is a research director at Inria and head of the FLOWERS lab at Inria and Ensta-ParisTech since 2008. Before, he has been a permanent researcher at Sony Computer Science Laboratory for 8 years (1999-2007). He studies developmental autonomous learning and the self-organization of behavioural and cognitive structures, at the frontiers of AI, machine learning, neuroscience, developmental psychology and educational technologies. In particular, he studies exploration in large open-ended spaces, with a focus on autonomous goal setting, intrinsically motivated learning, and how this can automate curriculum learning. With his team, he pioneered curiosity-driven learning algorithms working in real world robots (used in Sony Aibo robots), and showed how the same algorithms can be used to personalize sequences of learning activitivies in educational technologies deployed at large in schools. He developed theoretical frameworks to understand better human curiosity and its role in cognitive development, and contributed to build an international interdisciplinary research community on human curiosity. He also studied how machines and humans can invent, learn and evolve speech communication systems. He is laureate of the Inria-National Academy of Science young researcher prize in computer sciences, of an ERC Starting Grant, and of the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Evolutionary Linguistics association. Beyond academic publications and several books, he is co-author of 11 international patents. His team created the first open-source 3D printed humanoid robot for reproducible science and education (Poppy project, now widely used in schools and artistic projects), as well as a startup company. He is also working actively for the diffusion of science towards the general public, through the writing of popular science articles and participation to radio and TV programs as well as science exhibitions.

Dr. Richard E. Turner is a Reader in Machine Learning at the University of Cambridge and a Visiting Researcher at Microsoft Research Cambridge. His research fuses probabilistic machine learning and deep learning to develop robust, data-efficient, flexible and automated learning systems. Richard helps lead Cambridge’s renowned Machine Learning Group, the Machine Learning and Machine Intelligence MPhil, the Centre for Doctoral Training in AI for Environmental Risk, and the Cambridge Big Data Strategic Initiative. He studied for his PhD at the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit at UCL and spent his Postdoctoral Fellowship at New York University in the Laboratory for Computational Vision. He has been awarded the Cambridge Students' Union Teaching Award for Lecturing and his work has featured on BBC Radio 5 Live’s The Naked Scientist, BBC World Service’s Click and in Wired Magazine.

Ingmar Posner

Ingmar is an Associate Professor in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford specialising in applied machine learning solutions for robot perception and decision making. He is a long-standing member of the Mobile Robotics Group (now the Oxford Robotics Institute) where he leads research in machine perception and planning. His research is guided by his vision to create machines which constantly improve through use in their dedicated workspace by implicitly leveraging expert demonstrations in a manner entirely transparent to the user. Highlights of his work include state-of-the-art approaches to deep and shallow object detection, semantic segmentation, tracking and inverse reinforcement learning. Ingmar has coauthored over 40 research publications and is the recipient of a number of best paper awards at international robotics conferences such as ISER and ICAPS. He serves on the board of IJRR, the premier international robotics research journal and has repeatedly served as area chair and programme committee member for reputed conferences in robotics and machine learning. Recently Ingmar led a team to develop and demonstrate the first autonomous urban concept vehicle on a purpose built slow-speed racetrack at Shell’s Make the Future London event. In 2014 Ingmar also co-founded Oxbotica, a leading provider of mobile autonomy software solutions including the Selenium autonomy stack, which underpins a variety of public and commercial autonomous vehicle programmes such as the LUTZ and GATEWay projects in Milton Keynes and Greenwich. In 2015 Oxbotica was singled out by the Wall Street Journal as one of the top ten EMEA technology startups.

Gerben Oostra is a machine learning engineer that loves to solve complex problems. Originally graduated on algorithmic approaches in operations research, he switched to data science challenges about 10 years ago. Since then he has been applying data science and data engineering in various companies, amongst which ING and Vodafone/Ziggo. He therefore gained data science experience on a variety of challenges, including social network analysis, time series forecasting, anomaly (fraud) detection, natural language processing and bayesian modelling. More recently he has focused on solving churn cases, allowing him to combine his enthusiasm about both Bayesian modelling and time-series on a real life problems.

Marius Miron is a Postdoctoral researcher for European Commission’s Joint Research Centre within the project HUMAINT, working on fairness and interpretable machine learning and on assessing the influence of artificial intelligence on humans. He has a PhD (2018) in Computer Science (Audio Signal Processing and Machine Learning) from Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona. His PhD thesis concerned separating the audio corresponding to the instruments in an orchestral music mixture. He has completed internships at Computational Perception Group, Johannes Kepler University, Linz where he worked on deep learning for source separation, and at Telefonica Research, Barcelona, where he worked on catastrophic forgetting in machine learning. He was CTO of FromCounsel.com, a legal tech startup that provides corporate legal intelligence services to top law firms. At Sainsbury’s Argos Dave provides insight and direction into the Research and Development of AI, reporting directly to the Retail CTO.
Outside of work, Dave likes playing the bass guitar, bartering with his 3 sons for time on his PS4 and attempting to learn Mandarin. Dave holds a PhD in computer science from University College London and a BSc in physics from Imperial College London.

Fabon Dzogang

Fabon obtained his PhD in Computer Science in 2013 “on Learning and Representation from Texts for both Emotional and dynamical Information” at the University of Pierre et Marie Curie, DAPA department (LIP6). After graduating he held a post-doctoral position at LIP6, researching interpretable models for the classification of multivariate time series’ data. At this time he grew an interest in the analysis of time series’ data, and in the Fourier transform as a mean to extract meaningful features from data. He later joined the University of Bristol as a Research Associate in 2014 investigating efficient machine learning algorithms for data streams, and researching models to study our human behaviours at a collective level via the detection of periodic patterns in the social media or in large samples of press archives. Since 2018 Fabon is Lead Scientist ConversationalAI at ASOS.com working on the development of new NLP technology for Chatbot applications.

Mirco Musolesi is a Reader (equivalent to Associate Professor in the North-American academic system) in Data Science at University College London and a Turing Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute, the UK National Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. At UCL he leads the Intelligent Social Systems Lab. He held research and teaching positions at Dartmouth, Cambridge, St Andrews and Birmingham. He is a computer scientist with a strong interest in sensing, modelling, understanding and predicting human behaviour and social dynamics in space and time, at different scales, using the "digital traces" we generate daily in our online and offline lives. He is interested in developing mathematical and computational models as well as implementing real-world systems based on them. This work has applications in a variety of domains, such as intelligent systems design, ubiquitous computing, and digital health & wellbeing.

Michael McTear is an Emeritus Professor at Ulster University with a special interest in spoken language technologies. He has been researching in the field of spoken dialogue systems for more than 20 years and is the author of several books, including Spoken Dialogue Technology: Toward The Conversational User Interface (Springer, 2004), Spoken Dialogue Systems (Morgan and Claypool, 2010), with Kristiina Jokinen, and The Conversational Interface: Talking to Smart Devices (Springer, 2016), with Zoraida Callejas and David Griol. Michael has delivered keynote addresses and tutorials at many academic conferences and workshops, and is a regular presenter at the annual SpeechTEK conference. Currently Michael is involved in several research and development projects investigating the use of conversational agents in socially relevant projects such as mental health monitoring, home monitoring of the elderly, and the management of obesity.

He is also an image processing physicist and honorary senior research fellow working at Cardiovascular Research Centre, Royal Brompton Hospital and also affiliate with National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London. He has worked for Siemens Medical Solutions and Medicsight PLC before, and obtained comprehensive industrial experiences. He leads two international patent applications in pending in the fields of medical image processing. His research collaborators are from Imperial College London, St. George’s, University of London, Cambridge University, University of Lincoln, City University London, University College London, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China and UCLA in United States. He has participated in many medical image analysis projects including breast tumour image analysis using digital breast tomosynthesis (funded by Department of Trade and Industry and EPSRC); colon cancer computer aided diagnosis and detection using CT imaging (funded by TSB); multimodal advanced MRI analysis for brain tumour grading, classification, growth modelling and therapy planning (funded by CRUK). At National Heart and Lung Institute, he was working on a cardiac MRI project funded by NIHR. Recently, he proposed a novel workflow to achieve fast acquisition, superior image quality and quantitative analysis for the late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) MRI images, which could help diagnosis, treatment planning and prognosis of atrial fibrillation patients. For this proposal, Dr. Guang Yang (Co-PI) has been awarded a British Heart Foundation project grant. Dr Yang was a recipient of the Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa Award that was endorsed by the Royal Academy of Engineering. Tony has founded, co-founded, sold and listed many businesses but remains passionate about highly disruptive technology which has the capability of scaling fast, is at an early stage and creates value for people. He brings professional working knowledge and experience of raising funding as a founder, adviser and investor, including being a General Partner of a fund.
In addition to speaking at over 200 events and conferences on data, innovation, entrepreneurship, digital trends and early stage growth, he has authored and published three books. He then moved to academia, and have over 10 years of leading research programs across university of Cambridge and Oxford, where he is currently a visiting scientist. He is a highly cited active researcher in machine learning techniques across finance, medicine, energy, and retail. He has led various data innovation programs across the UK, including the National Health Service (NHS), and Energy Technology Institute (ETI). He recently joined REPL to lead their data science practice, founding data innovation programs across various retailers.

He previously founded one of the largest online communities for mathematicians in Greece and built numerous indie apps, winning the LSE Business week competition.

He is also a final year medical student at Imperial College London with a BSc in Biomedical Engineering. Jorge del Bosque

Jorge Del Bosque is a PhD Candidate under the Media & Arts Technology (MAT) Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) at the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) from Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). As part of the Cognitive Science Research Group and the Computational Linguistics and Education Labs, he is investigating the use of common ground in human-human conversations and developing dialogue models that would enable Voice User Interfaces to tailor explanations as humans do.
Jorge is a technology entrepreneur, founder of three software-based start-ups and a three-time finisher in the ITU Triathlon World Championships. As a Creative Technologist, he collaborated with Lizzie Wilson, Henry Cooke and Tim Cowlishaw and developed “Unspoken Word”, an interactive installation that converts spoken word into music which was exhibited at the ARS Electronica Festival 2018 (Linz, Austria), an international platform for art, technology and society.
His current research on Conversational User Interfaces supervised by Dr Julian Hough and Dr Matthew Purver has been presented at the workshop on Theoretical and Methodological Perspectives for Understanding Speech Interface Interaction at the ACM CHI Conference on Human-Computer Interaction 2019 (Glasgow, Scotland) and at SONAR+D Conference on Creativity, Technology and Business 2019 (Barcelona, Spain).
Jorge holds an MSc degree in Management and Organisational Innovation (QMUL) and a BSc degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from ITESM (Monterrey, Mexico).

Rob Weston is a PhD student at the Oxford Robotics Institute (ORI) speaking on behalf of Ingmar Posner, professor of Engineering Science (Applied AI) and founder of Oxbotica Ltd., an autonomous vehicle software company. His research focuses on the application of machine learning techniques to better harness the potential of radar data for robots operating in challenging real world environments. In order to be readily deployed in the real world methods are desirable which are able to process and, if necessary, assimilate new data online and in real-time, providing accurate measures of confidence to enable robust action-selection. These foundations underpin his work (both previous and to come) as well as a wider theme throughout the Applied AI group at ORI.
